LUMDING DIVISION – AN OVERVIEW

Jurisdiction of Lumding Division under Divisional Railway Manager Shri Pramod Jain  extends from Agthori to Furkating on Broad Gauge (Main Line) and from Chaparmukh Junction to Haibargaon (BG Branch Line) and from Lumding to Badarpur, Karimganj-Manu ; Badarpur – Silchar ; Lalabazar to Bhairabi and Arunachal to Jiribam on Metre Gauge as shown in the System Map. Lumding Division serves six Saates viz Assam, Tripura, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram & Meghalaya with a total route network of about 892 Km as shown in Table-1. It directly serves these states through a network of  125 stations and 4 out agencies at Shillong, Agartala, Kohima and Aizwal. The section from Agthori to Furkating was converted from MG to BG during 1994.

The region comprises southern plains of Brahmaputra, plains of Barak Valley, Hilly tracks of N.C.Hills, Karbi Anglong, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram and Tripura with dense forests. Roads and other means of communication in these areas are yet to be developed adequately and, therefore, the Railway continues to be the mainstay of   communication network, both economically as well as strategically.

Lumding Division bears the responsibility of transporting major requirements of food-grains, salt, oil, sugar, cement, coal, steel, fertilizer and other essential items to Barak Valley, Tripura & Mizoram. Outward traffic consists mainly of Coal, Paper, Bamboo, Timber etc. The inward traffic mainly foodgrains, edible oil, sugar, steel etc far exceeds outward traffic. Goods destined for Barak Valley, Tripura, Mizoram etc are transshipped at Lumding due to change of gauge from BG to MG. It is a challenge to keep the rail traffic moving all the time against natural calamities, which are comparatively more pronounced in this Division.

The Division basically handles passenger traffic. The main hub of passenger activity is centered on Guwahati. The maintenance of BG coaches are concentrated at Guwahati & New Guwahati. More than 68% of long distance Mail/Express trains originating from N.F.Railway are based at Guwahati. 19 pairs of passenger trains are dealt daily at Guwahati. The no. of passengers handled at Guwahati is about 20,000 per day.  Other major stations with large passenger traffic are Dimapur, Silchar, Diphu, Lumding, Hojai.  Computerized Passenger Reservation is available at 13 Railway stations and at 10 non-rail locations served by the Division.
