RANGIA HISTORY According to Assamese folklore, the name Rangia or Rangiya originated from two words ‘Ran’ and ‘Diya’ which mean ‘engage in battle’ as the place was a battlefield for the Bhutias in the North, the Darrangi kingdom in the East, the Ahoms in the South and Mughals in the West. However, some scholars believe that the name of the place originated from the Assamese word ‘Rang’, which means ‘fun’, as they believe that the place was full of fun and mystic pleasure. The credit for development of Rangiya as a modern township goes to the Railways. The Eastern Bengal Railway developed Rangiya as a junction, while constructing the Golakganj-Amingaon branch line along with the Rangiya –Rangapara section, between 1900-1910. The importance of Rangiya as a railway junction increased with the construction of the Rangapara North-Murkongselek railway line in 1966. Rangiya, which is an important sub-divisional town of Assam and a junction of the Northeast Frontier Railway, is located at 48 kms away from Guwahati. The rail link to Arunachal Pradesh with the rest of India is through Rangiya junction. One of the road links to Bhutan is also via Rangiya. The partition of the country on 15th August, 1947 created more problems for the Railways in the Eastern region in contrast to the Western region of the country. After the partition of the country, there was no access between Assam and the rest of the country, by rail or road, except through East Pakistan. The North-Eastern State of Assam badly needed a direct rail link with the rest of the country for political, strategic & commercial reasons. Therefore, the Govt. of India approved the construction of a direct rail link named as the ‘Assam Rail Link Project’, within Indian Territory, on a high priority. The broad gauge line between New Bongaigaon to Guwahati via Saraighat bridge was commissioned in the year 1984, which brought the capital city of Guwahati on the broad gauge network of the Indian Railways. The Saraighat Bridge across the mighty Brahmputra was constructed by the Indian Railways as Rail-cum -Road Bridge in the year 1960 with double metre gauge lines on the lower deck. This was converted into BG/MG gauntleted track in 1984 to provide a BG line through to Guwahati. The 510 kms Long Branch line from Rangiya to Murkongselek was the longest MG branch line on Indian Railways and occupies a very crucial position from the country’s defence point of view. The portion of the section from Rangiya - Rangapara North – Tezpur was constructed by the British between 1894 to 1933. The line beyond Rangapara North upto Murkongselek was constructed after the Chinese war in 1962. The section upto North Lakhimpur was opened in 1965 and beyond North Lakhimpur in 1996. Arunachal Pradesh was linked by rail, for the first time, after construction of the 34.04 km MG line between Balipara and Bhalukpong on 15.01.1990, of which 1.26 kms is in the State of Arunachal Pradesh. The Rangiya Division was carved out from Alipurduar Division of Northeast Frontier Railway and commenced operation from 1st April 2003. SALIENT FEATURES
