NFR celebrated World Environment Day With theme ‘Land restoration, desertification and drought resilience’

The World Environment Day is observed o­n 05th of June every year to raise global awareness with a view to initiate positive environmental actions to protect nature with participation of all stakeholders. This year the “World Environment Day” was observed all over N. F. Railway with the theme ‘Land restoration, desertification and drought resilience’ with focuses o­n Trees, healthy soil, and clean water that are imperative for a solid planet. To mark this occasion, Shri Chetan Kumar Shrivastava, General Manager of N. F. Railway inaugurated the Sewage Treatment Plant (STP) with a capacity of 100 KLD (kilolitres per day) and a Bio-Toilet Lab, at Kamakhya Coaching Depot in Maligaon. Senior railway officials of Headquarters among others were also present o­n the occasion. Tree plantation along with various other awareness drives were also carried out in headquarter and all the five divisions of Northeast Frontier Railway with participation of railway officials. A booklet o­n Environment and Housekeeping Management initiatives was also released by the General Manager o­n the occasion.


Due to increased urbanization, management of solid waste is becoming a challenge. To cope with problem, Government of India has introduced solid waste management rules in year 2016.  N. F. Railway has taken up various steps, including installation and commissioning of Incinerator at New Bongaigaon Workshop, Dibrugarh Workshop, Mechanized Laundry at Kamakhya Depot, Bio-Digester Plants at Guwahati Station & East Gotanagar, Bio -methanation plant at Central Hospital, Maligaon.

Speaking o­n the occasion, the General Manager said that N. F. Railway is taking multiple initiatives o­n all fronts to reduce adverse impact o­n environment. Northeast Frontier Railway predominantly functions in the ecologically sensitive areas of Northeast region. Accordingly, various initiatives like Conserving Green Belt along the tracks, Afforestation, Water Conservation, Solid Waste Management, Railway Electrification to reduce Carbon Di-oxide emission, Energy Conservation by using LED lights, Initiatives for Renewable Energy, Harnessing Solar Energy, Bio-friendly disposal of effluent discharge from the rolling stock along with various other environment friendly measures are being taken by N. F. Railway, the General Manager added. The World Environment Day was also observed by NFRWWO (Northeast Frontier Railway Women's Welfare Organisation) by planting saplings and organizing art competition amongst school children at various locations. 

N. F. Railway aims to be a partner in sustainable development of Northeast India to drive nation’s growth. Indian Railways is the most environmentally friendly sustainable mode of mass transportation. The steps being taken by railways in line with theme - ‘Land restoration, desertification and drought resilience’ will result in bringing back healthy land, keeping desserts from developing, and managing water shortages.
