Business Development Units set up at Head Quarter and Divisions in NFR for benefit of Traders

In order to increase the freight transportation volume, N.F. Railway has set up Business
Development Units (BDU) at all the five Divisions i.e. Katihar, Alipurduar, Rangiya, Lumding and
Tinsukia and at Zonal Head Quarter level, as per the instructions issued by Railway Board.
The BDUs set up in NFR are holding discussion/interaction with Traders/ Merchants /
Local Entrepreneurs / Logistic suppliers to specifically know about their need. Railway is
providing whatever facilities that can be arranged for the benefit of local traders to keep the local
economy moving. This has become necessary because of the changing business scenario in the
country in view of the COVID-19 pandemic.
At the Zonal Head Quarter level, the unit consist of senior officials from Operating,
Commercial, Finance and Mechanical departments. At the divisional level also similar BDUs have
been made operational.
These BDUs will have frequent interaction with Trade & Industry players within their
respective areas to find new traffic for movement by train. Proposal received from trade bodies or
businessman will be promptly analysed, developed and necessary assistance will be provided, if
Through formation of these BDUs, Indian Railway is also targeting to increase its share in
transportation of miscellaneous non-bulk goods. This traffic which is very large in volume is being
traditionally moved by the road sector. Railway is planning to attract traffic from this sector to
improve its freight loading scenario. Various incentive schemes are also being offered for small
volume transportation of goods for short distances. Various new locations / stations have already
been opened for freight booking and loading/unloading for the benefit of small traders in NFR
Such interaction with BDUs will definitely provide the traders with ample scope to come to
know about loading / un-loading and transportation facilities being offered by Indian Railways. o­n
the other hand, it will also help Indian Railways to achieve the target of doubling its fright volume
being carried by 2024.
