Train Service indefinitely suspended in Darjeeling

Train services on the entire narrow-gauge Darjeeling Himalayan Railway section was suspended from 12th June 2017 in view of the prevailing situation in the hill district and considering safety of passengers as well as Heritage Asset of DHR. As bandh was called and sporadic violence was reported from some areas, the stations in the entire 87-km sections remained closed since then. As the situation remains volatile, it has been decided to suspend train operation in the section indefinitely.

Last night, some miscreants tried to burn Gayabari station but people of the locality controlled the fire and saved the heritage property from major damage.  Fire brigade team from Kurseong, Railway Protection Force personnel and State police personnel reached the site last night soon after the incident was reported. There has not been any other report of railway property being damaged in the area.

It may be mentioned that the current tourist season had seen a very favourable response with DHR recording an increase of 74% in cumulative earnings in 2017-18 (up to May) compared to cumulative earnings up to 2016-17. Increase in cumulative number of passengers in the same period has been 16.35%.
